Since the course will not officially meet until May 19, here is a list of initial primary readings that we’ll cover in the first several weeks of lecture. A full list of readings and required assignments will be provided at the first class meeting.

  1. John Millington Synge, The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea: Our first session will cover the growth of the Irish National Theater and Synge’s relationship to its development. These will be the first two plays we’ll examine after that introductory material.
