Olaf said he would like to have the examples for metonymy and synecdoche changed, so I thought I could put the examples I used in my tutorial up for discussion.

Metonymy

(1) Reading Shakespeare.

(2) The kettle is boiling.

(3) Washington issued a press release.

Synecdoche

(1) Fifty sails.

(2) We need a few more hands to help out. vs (3) We need a few more heads to help out.

I thought putting the mechanisms of replacement for metonymy - such as 'author for works' for (1) - may be a good idea, but it could also suggest completeness or lead to distracting details. Soeren Koopmann 18:59, 16 November 2008 (CET)
