Katharina K.: /* Bors of Gaule */

This shall become a list of all characters in the Caxton Morte D’Arthur. A division is (provisorically) made between MAIN Characters (on top) and minor characters (further below), each within ordered alphabetically (use common sense: (King) Arthur under A, Duke of Tyntagil under T, etc..
Since there are often lots of variants of spellings, alternatives should be given in brackets behind the name. Generally, a spelling with <i>i</i> has been chosen as main spelling, <i>e</i>'s at the end were omitted, i.e. the "standard" name follows a somewhat modernised spelling.

(Important) Appearances should be abbreviated in the Book.Chapter format (e.g. I.1). If there are earlier mentions of a special relation to sb., please replace with the earlier mention. If there are contradictions, state both.

Current distinctions are made between kings, knights and others. Special groupings are listed in the end. Crosslinking is currently missing.
Suggestion for genealogy: List only the closest relations (i.e.: Gawain: Son of Lot of Lothien and Morgause). Note proper reference as above. Do not list further relations that can be easily deduced, i.e. Gawain being nephew to Arthur due to Morgause being Arthur's half-sister (on the mother's side); UNLESS it is especially important at one point.
These suggestions are free to debate.
Feel also free to move characters around...especially from unimportant to important. Importance is to be seen not in the whole book but also for high importance in smaller parts.

Characters added for Books: 1 (complete); 13 (complete)

=Main Characters=
Main Characters take a prominent role in at least one part of the book. Generally, replacing their name would screw up the narrative and/or relation at whole. They are notable for certain feats or deeds (often in other Romaunces of their own) or their genealogical relations. Omitting them or changing their name would create confusion/irritation.
Note: Wikipedia has a file of [Arthurian Characters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Arthurian_characters]. These are, however, drastically reduced in number compared to the high number of characters in the Morte d'Arthure. They are, of course, the most well known. (As has been said in the seminar: who woul generally assume the Round Table to consist of 150 knights, some of them eventually deceased and replaced by new ones?) This article does NOT look at the Morte exclusively but at the big Arthurian Tales more in general.

''predetermination/foreshadowing, christianity:''
King's prayer: "Faire lord lete me never dye tyl the good knyghte of my blood of the ix degree be come that I may see him openly that he shal encheve the Sancgreal that I may kysse him."

(4) The narration about king Evelake's past continues and we find out that his imploration was answered by God for there shall come a knight who will heal him from suffering ('''predetermination''').
After Parcival has left the monastery he is attacked by twenty knights and saved by Sir Galahad. Unfortunately Parcival is not able to follow him and to "doo thankynges" to Galahad ('''knighthood''') because his horse was slain in the fight and the "yoman" he meets denies his request to lean him the "black stede" of his master.

(5) In the next chapter Parcival is persecuting a strange knight who has stolen the "black stede" from the "yoman". Refusing to fight the knight kills Parcival's "hakney" and departs.
A few hours later Parcival meets a mysterious woman offering him her horse if he will "fulfylle" her "wyll" and he agrees to do so.

(8) After Parcival has revealed his identity the knights finally realize their mistake. Launcelots adventures are told to Ector and Parcival.

''love and fidelity:''
Sir Ector and Sir Parcival have been searching for Launcelot for two years. They were sent by the queen.

''orders of knighthood:''
Launcelot has broken the orders of knighthood because he first refused to tell his name.

(9) Sir Bors and Sir Lyonel arrive at the house of Brandegore where Bors' illegitimate son, Helyn le blank, lives. Bors wants to take him with him to king Arthur's court where he receives knighthood.
Launcelot first refuses to return to the court, to serve king Arthur and, again, the orders of '''knighthood''' are broken. Only after having heard about the queen's "dole" Launcelot changes his mind and leaves his family (Elayne + Galahalt).

''foreshadowing:''
Elayne predicts Galahalts future (knighthood): "he shal preve the best man of his kyn except one"

(10) The knights return to Camelot and tell about the adventures of Launcelot and why he was kept from returning to court ("he had ben oute of his mynde".

''love and fidelity:''
The queen is weeping "as she shold have dyed" while listening to Launcelot's adventures. The knights all know that Launcelot was out of his mind because of his love to her.

(11)
After having spent to years of adventure Tristram returns to Isoud and finds out about Launcelot'S return to court and Tristram is called on to join the festivity by Isoud in order not to "forsake" his "worship".

''love'':
A letter written by the queen was sent to Isoud in which she wrote to her "alle how it was for to requyre" Tristram "to seke" Launcelot.

''kighthood:''
Obviously the order og knighthood are broken if a knight of the round table refuses to serve the king in order to be able to spend his time with his love.

(12)
Tristram leaves Isoud in order to return to Camelot. Being on his way he meets Sir Palomydes and challenges him to a fight but Palomydes declines to do to because Tristram is "unarmed" (he does not wear his armature).

''knighthood:''
It is not bestowed to a knight to attack someone who is not armed properly (Palomydes: "[...] dishonour shal be myn")

''christianty:''
Because of his noble manners Tristram wants to win Palomydes for christianity (Palomydes still is a heathen).

(13)
Palomydes tells Tristram about his oath preventing him from being christianed (as he says he has to do "one batail" (only)) and Tristram challenges him after having lent the armature of Palomydes' former opponent.

(14)
The fighting starts and after two hours both knights feature wounds. Finally Palomydes' sword drops put of his hands due to the force of Tristram's strikes and Tristram abandons fighting. Now the knights seek the "suffrecan of Carleil that shalle gyue [Palomydes] the sacrament of baptym" before returning to king Arthur's court.

''knighthood:''
Seeing Palomydes unarmed Tristram ends the fighting in order not to "slee ony knyghte that is wepenles".
