Encore Award (given by the Society of Authors)
how often is the prize given away?
-The Encore Award used to be awarded yearly since 1990 and is now awarded biennially
who is eligible? -the work must be a novel by one other who has had only one novel published previously -the work must be in English language, first published in the UK, and not a work for children -either (a) the author must be a British or Commonwealth citizen or (b) the book must have been first published in the UK
what are the entry procedures? -publisher nominates book for election -The award is selected by a group of three judges.
what is the actual award? -The prize comes with 10,000 pounds-divided amongst the winners in years where there is more than one.
is there a shortlist/longlist? - These authors are in the run-up for the next award: Vikram Chandra – Sacred Games (Faber) Will Eaves – Nothing to be Afraid Of (Picador) James Lasdun – Seven Lies (Cape) Mary Lawson – The Other Side of the Bridge (Chatto) Jon McGregor – So Many Ways to Begin ( Bloomsbury)
when is the winner announced? -e.g. the winner of the award 2007 (concerning a book published in 2005/2006) was awarded in may 2007 (so this is the date of the bestowal)
who was/were the latest winner(s)? -Encore Award 2007 for the best second novel of 2005 and 2006 has been awarded to
M .J. Hyland for CARRY ME DOWN (Canongate).
